Belfast to Bushmills is two hours each way, so what separates these days is the coast in between: Dunluce Castle on its cliff, the rope bridge at Carrick-a-Rede, the beech avenue inland. These three carry the most travellers.

West Belfast has been driven by black cab since the buses stopped running there in the 1970s, and the drivers still work both sides of the line. An hour covers the Falls Road and the Shankill Road, the gable-end murals on each, and the gates in the peace wall that are still closed at night. Drivers come from both communities and each tells it from where they grew up; travellers with a spare afternoon book one of each.

The Dark Hedges
Two rows of beech trees were planted along a carriage drive in County Antrim in 1775, to impress visitors arriving at a Georgian house. Two and a half centuries of Atlantic wind later they lean into each other over the road, a television crew filmed the Kingsroad under them, and the lane has not been quiet since. Storms have taken several of the trees; cars are banned, so every visit is on foot.

The Titanic Slipways
Titanic was drawn, built and launched in Belfast, and the yard is still legible. The drawing offices where the plans were made are open, the pump house and dry dock sit at the end of the quay, and the two slipways are marked out at full scale on the ground so you can walk the length of the hull. The museum beside them is built as four hulls, on the exact spot.

Derry~Londonderry still fits inside its own walls.
The only city on the island with its walls still complete, and the full circuit of the ramparts takes about an hour. Below them are the Bogside gable ends and the Guildhall; across the water, the Peace Bridge curls over to the Waterside.

The Antrim coast road was blasted out of the cliff.
The A2 was cut into the basalt in the 1830s to reach nine glens that had only ever been served by sea. It still runs that way: Larne to Ballycastle with the water on your right the whole time, a waterfall walk at Glenariff and a rope bridge at the far end.

The rain is why Antrim is that green. Plan around it.
It rains here roughly every other day and it rarely holds all afternoon. The coast runs anyway; what changes is where the wet hour goes. A cab has a roof, the Titanic galleries take two hours on their own, and every distillery ends indoors with a glass in your hand.
